Born and raised in Chicago, as a child he was awed by choirs and gospel music. This interest grew out of his involvement in the children’s church choir. Walker’s love for gospel music grew even more intense until 1994, when he became a founding member of Voices of Great Faith (VOGF), where he was known as “Mr. Great Faith” and he served as assistant director. During that time, Walker also directed other gospel choirs.
Walker was drawn to the love of God early in life. In addition to his mother and grandmother, who have been great influences throughout his life, Walker has also been inspired by gospel greats such as O’landa Draper (The Associates), Ricky Dillard (New Generation Chorale), Walt Whitman (Soul Children of Chicago), Thomas Whitfield, Charles G. Hayes (Cosmopolitan “The Warriors”), Keith Pringle (Pentecostal Community Choir) and Reverend Milton Brunson (The Thompson Community Singers).
In 2003, Walker became the founder and director of his choir, Zion Movement (ZM). This vision furthered in December 2005, when the Lord prompted Walker to lead ZM in their first live recording session. This debut project, “MOVE”, includes songs written and arranged by Walker. In 2009 he lead ZM to their second live recording. This 2nd project, entitled “MOVE II: Bring the Choir Back”, generated even more excitement around the world.
Zion Movement are Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound’s Choir of the Year 2013; with this honour came a cash prize as well as a record deal. ZM received the grand prize recording contract, releasing a CD of new and old songs of ZM entitled “Greater Than Before”. This project produced more success, and, in this way, they won three more major prizes award accomplishments: 2014 Stellar Award Nomination, “Contemporary Choir of the Year”, 2014 Chicago Music Award Winner, “Contemporary Choir of the Year and 2014 Dove Award Nomination, “Traditional Gospel Album of the Year.
In 2018 (recorded in 2015), Walker released his third CD “HOPE”. This album showcases the choir’s dazzling vocal skills and versatile gifts, with spirited performances and powerful ministry that have drawn a widespread admiration from an international audience.
Having had no formal musical training whatsoever, Walker’s leadership of a music ministry such as ZM is, according to Walker himself, an inarguable testimony of God’s blessing him with the gift of music. He has also served as choir workshop facilitator for many churches, schools and organizations.
In 2008, Walker’s arrangement of “Open My Mouth” was selected as one of the songs recorded with the Gospel Music Workshop of Americas youth/young adult segment.
Through his work as songwriter, arranger, workshop clinician and director, Dexter D. Walker is a true humble servant of God. His testimony is simple: “God turned nothing into something. He has really made the impossible possible in my life”. As God leads him further into his ministry and purpose, Walker will continue to live out his dream through his spiritual vision.
